About Reagan's Family Care

When my family moved to Alabama in 2017, I struggled to find a pediatrician for my girls. Clinics were full, or I was asked to submit medical records before they would even consider my children. Too often, the calls back were rejections. I couldn't help but wonder if my youngest's autism diagnosis was the reason. A child with autism can be time-consuming and challenging to care for, especially when nonverbal.

After 15 years as a nurse, that experience drove me to return to school to become a nurse practitioner. My goal was simple: to be the provider people recommend when asked, “Where can I take my child with autism or other special healthcare needs?”

As I began practicing, I quickly realized how limited evaluations, resources, and services are for children with autism and other complex needs. Many providers simply aren't familiar with the resources these children deserve. Families often leave visits without the support or guidance they need. After two failed attempts to create this kind of clinic with others, I realized the only way forward was to open Reagan's Family Care on my own.

As a mom, I know life can be hard. As a mom of a child with special healthcare needs, I know it can be messy, unconventional, and overwhelming. I know the embarrassment and frustration that can come just from sitting in a waiting room. I know the heartache of shifting the dreams you once held for your child into a new reality where health and happiness come first. And I know the deep worry about what will happen when you are no longer there to care for them.
